Launched in December 2022, Instagram Notes are brief text notes you can post to followers you follow back or to your “Close Friends” list. They’re displayed at the top of the inbox, above all your direct messages.
Once a new note is posted, followers can reply by clicking on the note on the main chat page, and their responses will appear in the user's inbox as direct messages. Your followers won’t receive any notifications about your note.
Notes have a time limit of 24 hours, similar to Instagram Stories, and attempting to share a new note before the 24 hours are up will cause the previous note to be deleted.
You can only use a maximum of 60 characters, including text and emojis. Because of this character limit, your Notes should be brief.
How to use Instagram Notes:
Instagram hasn't made the feature available to everyone yet, but if you already have the feature, here are the steps:
- Ensure you have the latest version of the Instagram app on your iOS or Android device, and open the app.
- Go to the Direct Messaging (DM) section, located in the top right corner with a message bubble icon. You should see a section at the top of the page labeled 'Notes.'
- Click on the "+" button to create a new note.
- You can share the note with your "Close Friends" or followers you follow back.
- Click "Share" to publish your note.
A useful marketing tool?
Most marketers are uncertain if Instagram Notes are effective or valuable, as they appear somewhat concealed within the app.
BUT!
While they may not help boost account reach, they can be valuable to garner engagement from your existing community.
This is an opportunity for more intimate interactions with your followers. They shouldn't replace primary updates but be a supplementary way to communicate with your audience. For example, if you intend to share exclusive discounts or deals, Instagram Notes can be used to target a smaller, more trusted audience.
